Skull Composition

My Skull and Composition Drawing
This is my skull composition that I had made in class. I had used an hb, 2b and 6b pencil to create my composition. I am going to talk a bit about the different principles of design that I had used for this piece.

For this piece of work I had used variety/contrast. I had really used this principle to identify between the different darks and lights that I had seen in my composition. Some lines are thicker than others and some are thin. Some parts are very dark and then slowly get lighter as the light starts to hit it certain objects.

The second principle that I had used was movement. To create movement I did not just put my skull in the middle of the page I had put it more off to the side so your eye will have to move around some more. The swirling sculpture that I have on the left side creates a lot movement and the shape of the container that the skull is on also creates movement. I have lines moving through out that catch your attention with the help of the contrast. In this piece you can feel movement and I feel this is an important principle that helps your drawing not look boring and catch a viewers attention.

Another principle that I had used was balance. The type of balance that I had used was asymmetry balance. This is balance were the two sides look different but are balanced. I had put things at both sides so nothing is in the middle. Even if I had put my objects in the middle the composition would have no type of balance. This is because it has neither symmetry nor radial balance. I think this piece has an interesting sense of balance, which makes it all the more interesting.

One principle that I had slightly used was emphasis. I had slightly used it for making the skull a bit larger. I also have "converging lines" that help lead to it. I have the movement in the swirling sculpture and the lines in the background that seem to be darker when they are away from the skull but bring your attention to where the actual skull is. I had made the skull, which is my focal point to be darker in colour compared to the container that it sits upon. This helps emphasis the skull and adds interesting views to this piece.

These are some of the main principles of design that I had used in my piece. If I could I think I would fix up more of the contrast, and shading that I had done to make it look even more realistic. Anyway I hope you enjoyed my composition! :)
