Portrait- Pop Art

My Portrait! :)

Why did you choose this style of painting?
I chose this style of painting because I felt that it is simple, yet bold and pretty. I felt that this style of painting describes me because I am outgoing at times and and not very difficult to deal with. I really enjoy this style of painting because of the blocks of colour that I had used, and that they are just  different shades every time. I also really enjoy the bold colours. The background of my painting is a very bold blue and then changes to a more subtle and calm blue. I really feel like this describes me because I can either be really out there or very calm, and collected. All of these colours tie in with the actual portrait which makes everything seem very unified and together. This is why I chose this style because I can do the colours and the way I want yet in the end everything looks very organized and professional.

How did the finished painting evolve from the original idea?
The finished painting looks mostly the same as the original although some of the different lines are not there any more. This is because when I started painting I felt that some lines looked better if they weren't there. There was not much of a difference from the finished painting to the original idea except for some of the colours that had changed because if they were the same some of it did not look very unified. Other than that nothing else was changed.

What techniques did you use?
The techniques that I had used in this painting was projecting the image. I had to project it knowing that if I didn't the different shapes and proportions would have been distorted. So I had used that technique and then traced most of it onto the canvas. Also I had the technique of mixing one colour and then just adding a black or a darker colour to make the different shades. This was much easier than making a new one every time and trying to get it to be exact although my technique did not work every time. Other than that there was not many more techniques except for that one technique where if I happen to mess up I would just use the darker colour to cover it up instead of trying to try and use a whole new colour.

What was the hardest parts?
I would say that the hardest parts was lips, eyes, skin and projecting the picture. Projecting the picture was hard because my picture did not take up the whole canvas no matter what I did with the picture. So to make it the way it is now I had to draw some of it myself and I do not think it looks too bad because now the whole thing looks like it was all apart of the picture. The skin was hard because in the original image the skin was paler than it was right now. So when I was doing the skin I had to redo it three time and had to make it lighter every time until I was satisfied with how unified it look with the background and the hair. The last and probably the most hard and frustrating part was the lips. It was very hard to try and get the lips the exact colour. This was because every time I painted the lips on and then stepped away form the painting it would look either very bright or way to dark. Also it would look so weird with the whole painting because it looked like it didn't belong with it. So I had done the lips over many times until I came across this one which seemed to work more with the painting. If I had done it lighter it would have looked to pale and I found that it did not look too bad, and I know it would have taken me forever to get the exact colour. So I had just gone with this one because I had liked it more than the others and I felt that it worked much better with this piece. Also the eyes were hard because I had my wrist splint on it made it harder for me to make the curves in the eyes. Also it looks different from the picture but I do not mind them too much any more because I had added the glasses and that made the eyes look less weird and much better. Which is one reason I am glad to have glasses!

What would you change if you could?
If I could change anything about this painting I think that I would change the lips and the skin again. If I had more time I would have made the skin lighter than it is now and then I would be able to change the lip colour to how it was before. Although other than that there is not much I would change it's just little details that seem to frustrate me but if you look at it form far I think it looks fine. Overall it would just be the skin and the lips but I think they are fine at the moment.

Overall painting this portrait of myself was a very fun experience and I learned so much from it! In the beginning I never knew how to paint and I finish off with a portrait that looks like me! I am really glad I had the chance to do this and I hope you enjoy this painting as much or even more than I do :)

Kinetic Typography

This is a video called "The Choices We Make". The main story behind this video is based on the choices that people make. The audience for this video I would say is anyone and everyone. I feel that this video is meant for everyone to watch because it will affect the way you will think about the choices you make in your everyday life. In this video it does not say it is for this specific type of person. it is meant to inspire many different people no matter how young or old you are. I think the message of this video is to make people think more about the choices that they make in their everyday life. Like to think if it will be the right choice or not, and also to remind you that all these different choices are going to affect your future in one way or another. Every choice you make will follow you to the future and you should really think about these different choices that you make. I think this video is more of a non-fiction piece of work. The techniques that this person had used was make bold text and animations, very clear and consistent voice and lastly music. The quality of this video is good because everything is very clear and you get a clear understanding of the message the person is trying to infer. I think the visuals were very nice because they were very bold and easy to see. They are easy to read and stand out while you are watching. Also the music and the voice do not overpower each other. The voice is very consistent and and music in the background does not over-power the speaker. They both work very well together and keep you engaged throughout the piece.

This video is called "A Day In The Life Of Social Media". The main idea behind this video is to show the viewers how powerful social media is and the affects it has on our lives. I think the audience for this piece would be people that have social media accounts or people that want to learn about it. I think this because it shows what happens throughout the day of a person that own social media accounts. The message for this piece is mainly just to show what people do in just 24 hours. How much will happen and how people will not want to miss a minute of all the craziness. It's too show how powerful social media is to humans and how it affects our lives. This also another non-fiction piece of work. The different techniques that the maker of this video had used was visuals, text, and music. The quality of all these things were good and not very distracting at all. I feel that the visuals and text together made the video all the more interesting and the different fonts and types of colours that were used were very eye-catching. I also think that the music was not to too loud and you can adjust it anyway and so you can focus on the writing. I overall really liked this video because I thought it was very informational.

I hope you check out these two videos, and look up some on your own because kinetic typography is really good way to get your message across and looks great! :)

Trip to the AGO!

Our CyberARTS class had went to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) for a school trip last week. I had went once before but we were mainly focused on geographic landscapes as I had come with my geography class. This time around we had got to look at all different types of paintings and really just observe different styles. We got to look at many portraits and their styles also to inspire us on our self portraits that we will be doing.
I really enjoy seeing the paintings first hand rather than in books because then you actually get to "see" it. You get to see how big the painting really is and the different brush strokes  and textures that it is. In books or on-line it still looks good but I feel that it doesn't give the painting or sculpture enough justice for how beautiful it looks in person

I had really liked this painting because of the artists use of bold colours. I feel that the colours really grabbed my attention and made me want to look at it some more. This painting was a very smooth textured painting. Also I feel like the different lines of colours  just kept me in the painting. My focus was just in it because the lines would just keep leading into one another. It really kept me inside of the painting which was one thing that I had really liked about it.

The other thing I had really enjoyed about the AGO was the two showcases of bottles. These showcases were huge and were just filled with different types of bottles! They seemed to be bottles from many different places and every bottle had unique features. i thought it was so cool to think that every bottle was different and every bottle had a different meaning to them. Every single bottle had different textures and shapes and that just kept me looking at them trying to take in every single one. These bottles were so interesting and had me really intrigued!

Overall I had really enjoyed going to the AGO and would love to go again to spend more time looking at different paintings. I encourage everyone to go to the AGO! :)

Skull Composition

My Skull and Composition Drawing
This is my skull composition that I had made in class. I had used an hb, 2b and 6b pencil to create my composition. I am going to talk a bit about the different principles of design that I had used for this piece.

For this piece of work I had used variety/contrast. I had really used this principle to identify between the different darks and lights that I had seen in my composition. Some lines are thicker than others and some are thin. Some parts are very dark and then slowly get lighter as the light starts to hit it certain objects.

The second principle that I had used was movement. To create movement I did not just put my skull in the middle of the page I had put it more off to the side so your eye will have to move around some more. The swirling sculpture that I have on the left side creates a lot movement and the shape of the container that the skull is on also creates movement. I have lines moving through out that catch your attention with the help of the contrast. In this piece you can feel movement and I feel this is an important principle that helps your drawing not look boring and catch a viewers attention.

Another principle that I had used was balance. The type of balance that I had used was asymmetry balance. This is balance were the two sides look different but are balanced. I had put things at both sides so nothing is in the middle. Even if I had put my objects in the middle the composition would have no type of balance. This is because it has neither symmetry nor radial balance. I think this piece has an interesting sense of balance, which makes it all the more interesting.

One principle that I had slightly used was emphasis. I had slightly used it for making the skull a bit larger. I also have "converging lines" that help lead to it. I have the movement in the swirling sculpture and the lines in the background that seem to be darker when they are away from the skull but bring your attention to where the actual skull is. I had made the skull, which is my focal point to be darker in colour compared to the container that it sits upon. This helps emphasis the skull and adds interesting views to this piece.

These are some of the main principles of design that I had used in my piece. If I could I think I would fix up more of the contrast, and shading that I had done to make it look even more realistic. Anyway I hope you enjoyed my composition! :)

Content-Aware Tool

In Photoshop CS6 there is now a new feature called the "content-aware move". This tool allows you to move a certain person, or object in a picture into a different place that you desire. Even if you just need to move it a little bit you can now do that! Even if it's just for a little adjustment in your picture, this seems like a very helpful tool. I feel like this would help a lot in trying to move something around, showing your friends something cool or just wanting to change a whole picture up. I personally think this is a very new and cool tool and suggest you all check this out!

Mask Type Tool

I had chose to do the word "fierce" for this assignment. When I thought of this word I had though of fire right away, and how powerful this word is. I had made the font of it very bold and exaggerated, to really portray fierce. The font is very big and powerful to get the point across.

To make this image I had used Photoshop CS6. I had taken a picture of fire and put it on one layer then put a layer over top of it. On that layer I just used the paint bucket tool and the eraser tool. With the paint bucket tool I just painted everything black and changed the opacity of it so I could still see what was underneath of it. For the eraser tool all you had to do was erase the writing that you wanted to be shown. I had used the text tool to choose the different font, and different sizes. After that I had erased the words. This is a process called "scratch art". I had done this a few times to try it out and really get my point across.

In this photo I had wanted to achieve the look of something very fierce and straight to the point. I had chose fire because it's hard to put out a fire and this happens when you are fierce. You feel like nothing can stop you because you are so determined for something. I would say the fire really helped to get my point across along with the bold font. It really exaggerates everything.

Overall I think this picture has turned out pretty good, and there is not much to change other than maybe the image in the back. Making it more visible, but other than that I am satisfied with my work!
Enjoy! :)
